Lord Henley turns on Europe’s largest community energy battery and Solar PV farm at Trent Basin

Lord Henley is the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. The event was attended by a representative of the Trent Basin Resident’s Association and key partners of the project, including leading energy provider SRS Works Ltd.

The Trent basin Urban Solar farm is a unique solution SRS Works have provided to the project to allow the PV Modules, the mounting equipment and Inverters from the farm to be decommissioned and used again on the flat roofed buildings as they are constructed, Phase by Phase. Thereby providing energy for the residents continuously.

The event last Friday included a tour of the energy assets provided by Project SCENe at Trent Basin. These include an urban solar PV farm, a community energy hub, providing a physical space to interact together and around matters of energy and sustainability, and smart technology for in-home and community-level use to improve how we and the public engage and interact with energy and shift to more sustainable energy and demand management practices.

Additionally, an innovative Community Energy Company has been set using ground-breaking business models to manage the energy assets and provide energy services to its residents which includes storing and selling locally-generated energy to the grid at peak times. Profits made by the ESCO will help to cut energy bills for residents who opt in to join the scheme and vote on its direction and share its benefits.

A unique collaboration between the renewable energy industry and academia, the Trent Basin community energy project is headed up by the academic lead Professor Mark Gillott, from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham.

“We need a mind shift away from personalised household energy generation, storage and use, to larger local community energy schemes that provide greater efficiencies and cost savings. Our aim is to make this technology commercially-viable in order to increase the adoption rate and help revolutionise the UK energy sector.”
